The FOMO score, from 0 to 100, estimates how likely you are to care that a
release is coming. It is recalculated every night for movies, TV, music and books
from a year ago to two years ahead. Releases outside that window show "–".
What counts
- Movies and TV: the people behind it (the first six billed
cast, directors, writers and show creators) and their track record: how many
films and shows with 500+ TMDB votes they have led, directed or written, and
their biggest one. The strongest person counts fully and the next adds 30%.
A movie also counts its franchise (the best other film in its TMDB collection);
a show counts how many people have voted for it on TMDB.
- Music: the artist's standing on MusicBrainz (reference links
such as Wikidata, Discogs and AllMusic, studio albums, ratings), how many editions
the release is out in, and cover art. Albums count more than EPs, EPs more than
singles.
- Books: the author's Wikipedia articles (in how many
languages), Open Library readers' ratings, editions and a cover.
- Everything: current TMDB popularity for movies and TV, signs of
a finished release (poster, synopsis, budget), and crossover: the people behind it
known for notable work in another medium, like a musician's film or an actor's
album.
Some things count against a release: shorts, news, talk shows and daily soaps,
compilations, live and remix records, Various Artists, new editions of older books,
and books by authors who died long ago.
From signals to a score
Each medium is ranked on its own, and the score comes from the rank:
100 − 20 × log₁₀(rank per year). So every medium has the same number of
releases at each level, and a movie at 70 is as rare among movies as an album at 70
among albums.
| Score | Releases a year, per medium |
| 80+ | about 10 |
| 60+ | about 100 |
| 50+ | about 316 |
| 40+ | about 1,000 |
Picks and reasons
- FOMO picks, the default timeline, shows releases scoring 50 or
more. Everything shows the rest. Searches and catalogs always show
everything.
- "Why it's a pick" names the strongest signals, like "Directed by Denis
Villeneuve" or "Part of the Dune Collection".
- Signed in, what you follow (or is shared with you) is raised by 15 and always
joins your picks.
Popularity, votes, ratings and editions keep growing after
release, so past releases are scored partly on how they did; upcoming ones rely
more on the people and franchise behind them. Book dates are year-only. Data:
TMDB, MusicBrainz, Open Library and Wikidata.
